Odette retrieved the atlas from his bag after he threw it to the backseat but paused once she caught a glimpse of his face out of the corner of her eye. He seemed upset after peering towards the backseat, and she gave a second look to let her gaze fall upon some children items as well as a number of clothes. 'He must be thinking about Chicago and all the things he stole.' Her expression momentarily turned into a frown as he fled the vehicle to rid it of the sentimental articles, but she changed it back to her normal soft smile by the time he got back to the car. He obviously didn't want to think about it, so she wouldn't act as if she noticed his change in demeanor. At his mention of saying goodbye to the home they had made for themselves, she sighed quietly and gave a slow now.
"It's time to move on," she agreed, reaching a hand over to place on his mid-thigh in a comforting gesture. As he began to roll down the road, she noticed a couple walkers come out from a few alleyways, but they weren't able to catch them. 'Thank goodness we're at least safe from them in here - even if it's only for a little while.'

That was it. Everything they were leaving behind was nothing now, and they had no reason to stay. That's all there was to it. Gage had to keep reminding himself that as he quickly pulled out of the spot on the side of the road, then sped down the street, ignoring the damaged street lights and broken stop signs along the way. Every once in a while, he'd peer to either side of them and take in the sight of the practically abandoned city. The image of decaying buildings and damaged cars was one thing, but he still couldn't believe it whenever he'd see the undead...alive, and walking around. Gage frowned, then slowed to a stop by an intersection, leaning over to look at the map. After a moment of mumbling to himself, he nodded, silently answering his own question, then accelerated again towards the highway exit ramp.
----------------- It had been nearly a half an hour, and they were still 15 miles outside of the town where Odette's parents lived. It was fucking ridiculous...normally Gage could get there in 15 minutes flat, but because of the blockades, barriers, and zombies walking around, he was constantly swerving, accelerating, or slowing to move around them, or run them over. He brought his hand up to rub the side of his temple, then glanced over at her. "What are you thinking?" He asked, concern evident in his voice.

The various obstacles in their path were beginning to become a nuisance, and she couldn't believe it when she realized they were still a good ways away from her hometown - despite their thirty minutes of driving. Along the way, she noticed a dog on the street who looked like he hadn't been fed in a week, and her heart steadily began to sink. The poor thing probably had no idea what had happened and just wondered why his owner and best friend wasn't around any longer to play fetch or feed him. Instantly, she thought of the family dog, Scooter, and wondered if he was in the same condition - alone, hungry, and sad.
Her thoughts were disturbed as Gage asked her what she was thinking, and she wasn't sure what to tell him. She didn't want to even think what she was thinking, nonetheless talk about it. Instead of confiding in him, she simply shook her head and kept her gaze out the window. He had enough issues to deal with in this crazy ass world, and she wasn't going to throw her troubles on top of him - especially not in that moment. And honestly, the mere thought of her parents being dead brought tears to the surface of her eyes, but she held them back. In her naive sense of hope, she would continue to believe that they were alive and well unless she saw otherwise.

He exchanged glances between the road and her every so often, only to scowl at her lack of a response. Whatever was going through her mind, he figured, was probably making her upset. The fact bothered him, but Gage simply sighed and turned back to gaze at the road, too determined to get them to her parents' house. And, in the back of his mind, he wondered how they were doing. Were they alive? Were the fighting? Or...god forbid, had they already passed and turned? He shuddered at the thought of such good people being morphed into flesh-eating zombies. If only they knew what they were really doing to other people. But, then again, he thought about the population as a whole. What would everyone think of everyone? Sure, you got the undead, but what the fuck was the excuse for the people who still lived? Some of them acted like monsters on a daily fucking basis.
After a few more silent minutes, he let his thoughts clear his head as they entered into the town of Douglasville, and hastily made his way down various roads as quickly as possible. He didn't dare look off to the side to take in the sight of a probably decimated town that he had grown all too familiar with. It would just be more painful. As he turned onto her parents street, he slowed almost to a crawl, then, after moment, pulled into the driveway of their house and killed the engine. They sat there in silence for a while, and then he decided to glance back over at her, keeping his voice low.
"You can get out first. I'll cover you in case...ya know, anything runs up or some shit."
